Our modern production facility is located in Lake Zurich, IL. At Bagel House today, we continue our family tradition that began at the dawn of the last century. In 1926 my grandparents opened a bakery in Chisinau, Bessarabia; then a province in the Russian Empire. Our family was baking bread and bagels until 1939, when the Soviets came and closed the bakery.
In 1941 World War II started and my grandparents moved to Russia pass the Ural mountains, they helped set up small bakeries during their journey to feed many hungry people. After the war ended, my grandparents came back to their native country,
Moldova, a newly established Republic in the Soviet Union. In 1947, Joseph Stalin gave permission to establish many private enterprises, my grandparents with my father opened a new bakery. They only operated the new bakery for 3 years when the local Soviet government nationalized it. |
